Astonishingly, the raging debate arround the Coke extradition request has not yet raised the question - if the recordings were legal, and it’s the handing over that is questionable, then why is it that our Police and the Attorney General has not brought any charges against Mr. Coke?
Is it that we all already know the answer to this question, why we shy away from asking it, so that in our pretend ignorance we avoid admitting the truth? That local law enforcement cannot even contemplate investigating such a prominent citizen of Jamaica.
We have arrived at a turning point, it has been brought home with razor sharpness that our elected officials are not in control, that in fact they serve with the tacit approval of the criminal underworld and that ultimately our democracy is a myth.
We can either decide that we will no longer tolerate the involvement of our political leaders with the underworld or we can ourselves continue to ignore the seriousness of our predicament and one day wake up to find ourselves in a rogue state run by a known criminal.
In Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, Cassius says that Caesar would not be a wolf were not the Romans sheep. Politicians lead with our approval, if we insist that they sever their ties to the criminal underworld then they can but obey.
These are extraordinary times and to deal with them we need extraordinary people, sadly our leaders have thus far shown themselves to be lessor than the times require. Until we demand more we will continue to get but excuses.
